Welcome everyone to another Mysidia Post Article. Today I am going to talk about one of the starter decks that has been officially confirmed for Opus VIII. To give context, GTS Distribution recently posted this photo:
To summarize the post, Opus VIII will release in March 2019 and will feature a FFVII starter deck with Advent Children art and a FFXIV starter deck featuring characters from the latest expansion Stormblood. Personally, I am very excited by the addition of more FFXIV card to the game. It is one of my favourite Final Fantasy’s and I believe its nature as an MMORPG will make it a long-term source for FFTCG to draw on for new cards.
We can see Lyse as a fire card on the front of the box, but what other characters from Stormblood will make it into the TCG? With the introduction of Stormblood characters, I believe we will see some support for new job (Samurai) archetypes and some old ones too (Scions and Ninjas).
Who else do I think will be featured in Opus VIII? Well let’s take a look at some of the characters from Stormblood who could make it into the set.
The Setting of Stormblood
In the Stormblood Expansion, you play as the Warrior of Light. The main goal throughout the expansion to liberate the countries of Ala Mhigo and Doma, both of which have been conquered by the Garlean Empire.
Ala Mhigo is a dry country with little forest. It is characterized by highlands that rise over the rest of the country. Ala Mhigo has a culture of martial arts. While the resistance fighters use all types of weapons, there is a history of monks in the nation.
Doma is similar to comparing Mainland China to Japan (there is an island nation like Japan in the game as well), although Doma is much smaller. The country has trained samurai and ninja for centuries.
Your main adversary in Stormblood is Zenos yae Galvus, the son of the emperor and the Viceroy of Ala Mhigo. He is also a warrior of incredible talent and has gone largely unchallenged for most of his life. He seeks the thrill only a worthy opponent can bring and is known to leave enemies alive in hope that they come back stronger than before for revenge.
WARNING: There may be minor spoilers below. Generally I just tried to describe each character, but you have been warned.
Characters Likely to be featured
The Ala Mhigans
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Monk, Martial Artist, Resistance Fighter, Ala Mhigan Rarity of Card: Starter or Hero Possible Element(s): Fire
Lyse is a member of the Ala Mhigan Resistance and is one of the main characters of Stormblood. Because she fights with her fists her job could potentially be Monk. Being a trained fighter, Lyse is likely to be printed as a forward. Lyse has some fairly publicized Amano artwork, so perhaps we will see her as a Hero or Legend at some point.
EDIT: As a kind gentlemen pointed out on Facebook, Lyse's job is "Scion of the Seventh Dawn" ok the card shown on the image posted. This is not entirely accurate lore wise, but I do not want to give away any spoilers.
Type of Card: Forward or Backup Possible Job(s): Ala Mhigan, Resistance Fighter Rarity of Card: Common or Rare Possible Element(s): Fire
M’naago is another member of the Ala Mhigan Resistance. She wields a bow and is a very skilled archer. Pre-expansion, M’naago makes an incredible run through enemy territory to bring intel to the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. She is close friends with Lyse so I would not be surprised to see if they have some kind of synergy. I would predict her to be a forward although if she were a backup that supported Lyse that would check out as well.
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Samurai, Lord Rarity of Card: Starter or Hero Possible Element(s): Fire
Hien is the king of Doma, and a skilled samurai. In Stormblood, the Warrior of Light finds Hien in the Azim Steppe, as he has traveled in search of strength to liberate his country from the Garlean Empire. I predict that Hien would be a forward with job Samurai. I would be very excited to see if he (and Gosetsu) provide the basis to build a samurai deck. If he is not a starter card, he would be a strong candidate for a Hero or Legendary rarity.
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Ninja, Shinobi (if SE hates us) Rarity of Card: Starter or Hero Possible Element(s): Water
Yugiri is the head of the shinobi that serve Doma and Lord Hien. She is honest and brave, a very loyal servant. She is likely in love with Hien, and as one of his main protectors, it would make sense for her to have an ability tied to Hien.
There is also a possibility that she would have ninja synergy, at the very least, if her job is ninja that will allow her to be played in ninja decks.
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Samurai, Retainer Rarity of Card: Starter or Hero Possible Element(s): Fire
Gosetsu is a headstrong retainer of Lord Hien and a tremendous warrior. Gosetsu served Hien’s father before Garlemald conquered Doma. Since the fall of the country, he has tirelessly devoted himself to the resistance. As he often counsels Hien, they will likely have synergy. Gosetsu is a traditional samurai, and could be a great piece for the archetype if the FFTCG developers decide to pursue it.
Type of Card: Backup Possible Job(s): Viceroy, Traitor, Spy Rarity of Card: Common or Rare
Possible Element(s): Fire, Water
Yotsuyu is a Doman traitor that sold out her people by working as a Garlean spy. Zenos yae Galvus made her acting Viceroy of Doma, knowing that her hatred of her people (due to a very rough life as a Doman) would mean she would remain loyal to Garlemald. Yotsuyu is hard to predict as a card. However, she was a prominent character in Stormblood, so we might see her involved in the set in some way.
The Garlean Empire
Zenos yae Galvus
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Viceroy, Crown Prince, Warrior Rarity of Card: Legend Possible Element(s): Dark, Fire
As mentioned above, Zenos is a peerless warrior. He is also a cruel and wicked man with little desire to lead the countries he has conquered. Zenos is next in line to the throne in Garlemald.
If Zenos were printed, he would likely be the Dark Legendary card for Opus VIII. The only other possibility in my mind would be Fire. But I think he is well deserving of the Dark element, as he is a fantastic villain in the game, and a very powerful character. Zenos wields many different swords and has a multitude of techniques. We could potentially see a special ability associated with Zenos.
Asahi sas Brutus
Type of Card: Backup Possible Job(s): Diplomat, Traitor, Samuari Rarity of Card: Common or Rare Possible Element(s): Dark, Fire
Asahi is the brother of Yotsuyu, and an absolute whackadoodle. He appears to the Warrior of Light as a sensible and capable samurai, however he almost immediately throws that charade away to show his true colours as a devout Zenos supporter.
Asahi would make a very cool Dark backup, especially if he has Zeno’s synergy. We haven’t seen a Dark back up in a few sets, so it is possible. I would be surprised if the Dark Hero and Legendary cards had too strong synergy with each other however, as that would limit deck building.
Fordola rem Lupis
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Skull, Cania Lupi, Traitor, Ala Mhigan Rarity of Card: Common or Rare Possible Element(s): Lightning
Fordola is part of a Garlean military group formed of Ala Mhigan traitors, called Cania Lupi. Traitor might be a more black/white way of putting it, as Fordola is part of a group of children born of Ala Mhigan nobility that were granted “Honorary Citizenship” to the Empire by serving for its military. However, her time in the military made her very cruel towards her own people.
Fordola (and Yotsuyu/ Asahi for that matter) would all be good candidates for new effects that utilize change of card ownership, similar to Shuyin and Kain from Opus VI. Each of those characters has betrayed their country in Stormblood and would fit the mechanic thematically. Fordola has significant power in the game, which could suggest that she would have a special ability.
Possible other Additions:
Type of Card: Forward Possible Job(s): Scion of the Seventh Dawn Rarity of Card: Common or Rare Possible Element(s): Wind, Ice
Moenbryda isn’t a Stormblood character, but I think she is a likely future card for two reasons. One, during the story of FFXIV A Realm Reborn, she joins the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, making her a candidate for Scions support. Two, she has a close relationship with everyone’s favourite Scion… Urianger! It would be very cool to see her printed with some sort of Urianger synergy.
Cid nan Garlond
Type of Card: Forward or Backup Possible Job(s): Engineer, Garlean Rarity of Card: Starter or Hero Possible Element(s): Lightning, Earth
Cid nan Garlond is the son of a Garlean Engineer who defected to Eorzea and started Garlond Ironworks focusing on developing Magitek technology. His initial role in the story is as the hero’s Uber driver. Whenever the plot requires an airship Cid shows up to pick you up. Cid continues to aid the adventurer throughout every expansion, taking vital roles in multiple story lines. I can see Cid as a forward that has synergy with his engineers, Biggs and Wedge, but he would also fit as a backup that supports the adventurer (you).
Biggs & Wedge
Type of Card: Backup Possible Job(s): Engineer Rarity of Card: Common or Rare Possible Element(s): Lightning, Earth
Biggs and Wedge are pretty iconic Final Fantasy names, even if they have never been iconic characters. In FFXIV Biggs and Wedge have been given more screen time than any of their past iterations. The pair is always found assisting Cid Garlond as two of his most talented engineers. These two clowns could potentially be part of a back up set up that searches for and/or supports Cid Garlond, similar to Kan-E-Senna or Brandelis.
Type of Card: Backup Possible Job(s): Engineer, Deputy President Rarity of Card: Common or Rare Possible Element(s): Lightning, Earth
Jessie is the Deputy President of Garlond Ironworks, and Cid's babysitter. While Cid works on big projects to and helps the adventurer save the world, Jessie works to make the company a viable business that generates profit. Despite the lectures Jessie gives Cid, it is clear she respects him. It would be easy to see the two have some sort of synergy. A general support card would also fit Jessie's flavour.
FFTCG has seen a lot of FFXIV characters used, but no summons as of yet. This is strange, as one of the main themes in the game is fighting primals (summons) that different tribes or people have summoned. I will leave a list of primals below that you we may one day see as a summons.
Thanks for reading everyone, I hope you enjoyed this article. Feel free to add to the discussion in the comments below. Did I miss any characters? Do you think we might see these characters differently than I predicted?
Also I would love any feedback if I messed up anything lore/character description wise. I wrote this article mainly from my experience playing FFXIV, and I filled in any gaps using the Final Fantasy Wikia.
