Happy spoiler season Mysidians! I am back with some more spoiler’s discussion for the upcoming Opus VIII set.
In this article I will break down my thoughts on each spoiler. Keep in mind that it is very hard to judge cards without seeing the entire set, and even then, some cards can be hard to predict. If you have alternate opinion to mine, that is great! Please share them in the comments so that we can all learn from more perspectives. I have sorted the cards by how they were spoiled. All of my information is from the sources themselves, and the Zodiac Braves, who are compiling a full Opus VIII spoiler list here.
I have also added a short section at the end of each spoiler discussing how each card could impact Title Format. Without further ado, lets get into the cards.
Card of the Week
Undead Princess 8-071H
This card has some pretty cute art, and her ability is very interesting. Flandit saw moderate play, but at some bigger tournaments. Flandit Tax was definitely a strong deck, so reason stands that this can be a competitive card. You can read RB’s excellent Card of the Week writeup for Undead Princess here.
Undead Princess can be used as a finisher, when your opponent is low on resources. You can pitch her for CP and always threaten to play her back using her second ability. She can also be used defensively, likely with her second ability (or some Tama shenanigans), but I don’t think that is the reason you will run her in a deck.
Her second ability can be used to recur strong Earth Backups like Masked Woman, Shantotto, and or just clear back up space by breaking searchers. Speaking of which, she can be searched by Epitav, who is also Earth. I am a little skeptical about her second ability, it is a big price to pay, and you don’t see Kuja’s similar ability used that often (although that brings him to your hand rather than the field). I think this card could see a one-of play in some decks.
Title Implications: FFCC is a Title that is lacking options so the more the merrier. The category still needs more options before it becomes viable in Title.
Once again I recommend you read RB’s write up here.
Alba has a pretty cool effect and may not necessarily need to be in a Warriors of Darkness deck to see play. Her entrance ability dulls as many forwards as Job Warrior of Darknesss you control, meaning that includes Backups, if we see any WOD Backups printed. Even if she enters the field by herself, she still dulls one forward. She is also an EX Burst, making her very similar to Cait Sith, however that second ability is pretty amazing. If your opponents board is dull, she cannot be stopped by targeted removal. Just watch out for forward activation and you will be fine.
Lightning already has a similar finisher in Ewen, and I think he is more reliable that Alba. Yes, Ewen needs more forwards for his ability to activate, but I think that is an easier condition to fulfill, especially against Wind in this meta as they play many forwards, and have forward activation.
Title Implications: Similar to FFCC, FFL needs more cards to make a viable Title deck, so it is nice to see more printed.
RB’s Card of the Week article.
Straight up this is Leon from Kingdom Hearts. Balance wise, it was right to name him Squall. I like this cards text. It is an on-curve Forward for a discard-oriented Ice deck, but it isn’t too fast. It will be pretty easy to fufill the requirement to make your opponent discard, which will make him “above curve” net CP wise. You will likely only be able to use his ability once per turn, but if this is in a more aggressive deck then one dull plus whatever you drew is likely helping you finish off games.
Title Implications: More discard for Category VIII is good, as it will help Squall 6-033H activate his abilities. It may even be useful as a one-of for key discard. His ability will be difficult to pay in Title, but isn’t impossible.
NA FFTCG Fan Fair Reveals
Pretty straight forward effect, almost always an upgrade over the new Bahamut. If we see people committing to high cost forwards in the future this could be strong. In general, it is efficient because you will almost always out value your opponent (you only lose one card from hand compared to whatever they paid for their forward). The timing of this card is the sticking point, as you cannot cast it early and it limits the way you can spend your CP. If you leave CP open to cast it you are probably spending CP from your hand, negating any advantage of playing it and telegraphing to your opponent that you have it in hand.
Title Implication: We need more Mobius Forwards, not more summons!
This card makes me hopeful of some kind of Mono Earth FFVII deck. This card can be very efficient if you have Cloud in play. A 2 CP 8K Brave forward is definitely strong. We know have an Earth Cloud to play this with, as well as, two Light versions, and a whole stable of Fire cards. My favourite Cloud to play is the 3 CP Light version, who unfortunately does not work with Tifa as you want to play him after you have played her. Her Special Ability is easy enough to cast and is a huge upgrade over the original starter Tifa’s Water Kick. I think this card will see a lot of play.
Title Implications: This card will be amazing in Title, you can have as many Clouds as you can play on the field, so she will likely always cost two. You will also have a plethora of Tifa’s to use for her Special Ability cost. Not to mention one Earth CP is an easy cost to pay in Title.
Dark Fina 8-042L
This card is pretty fair if you are below 5 damage. Paying 7 for a Summon and a body is nice, especially since the element is not specified, but that body is easily removed by Diabolos and other efficient options. Her second choice is stronger, as a 9K body with a summon cast can be very strong. A lot of people have pointed out she can cast something like 7 CP Odin, 7 CP Phoenix, or Zodiark but she would also be able also be able to cast very strong summons such a Diabolos or Titan and bring a lot of value to the table. I personally can’t wait to cast Zeromus with her as that is one of my favourite Summons in the game.
Now this card at 5 or more damage is bananas. You can search a summon and cast it all when she enters the field. Drawing a card and playing it for free is a very powerful effect. I think that this card will see a lot of play in Mono Ice decks as a finisher, and possibly Ice/Earth. Other Ice combinations tend to be faster decks and wouldn’t play this card.
Title Implications: Need more FFBE to make it viable in Title. We are receiving a ton in this set so it could happen, but they will likely still need more cards. This card specifically will need some FFBE summons printed before it will be used in Title.
Ark Angel HM 8-001R
I love it. What a nice ability to have on a Fire card. The card is 1k power under curve normally but jumps up way above curve when attacking. If you have Lebreau out, this guy will hit for 10K. You can combo with cards like Volker, Red Mage, or Zemus to create opportunities where he can hit for his 2 damage. I think he is actually pretty similar to the 6 CP Noel. There will be times where your opponent will have to block to avoid the 2 damage. This may result in them chump blocking or trading with a forward that they paid more for than you paid for Ark Angel HM.
Note that both EX Bursts will trigger if you hit two when dealing damage with Ark Angel HM.
Title Implications: This will give FFXI a great way to finish off games as Volker’s ability is much easier to use in Title. FFXI still needs some summons, but they are in a better spot with this card. I am excited to see how all the Ark Angels turn out.
Thanks for coming by to check out some spoilers. I will be posting my thoughts on the recent Masters/8th Anniversary/Edamame Arcade spoilers sometime this week!
